Finding Gold in the Attic

During a house call on the south shore of Massachusetts I was asked to go through the attic and see if there was anything of value.  It was an old sea captain's house who but most of the original furnishings had been removed.  There were a few old nautical maps and oil lamps.  A small sewing box sat on a shelf.  I assumed it would contain some old buttons but to my client's surprise we found an old gold coin rattling around inside.  More specifically it was a 1813 Capped Head $5 dollar gold coin!

I advised the client that we would have to have it graded before offering it for sale. We were pleased when the grade returned as an MS63.  I sold the coin for $17,000! for my client.  You never know what might be hiding in that little box in the attic.
